400 years from now

duckbunny

In the corridors behind the walls past a garden in a monastery in a village in a smaller country than this walked a set of young ducks and one rabbit. The rabbit brought up the rear – he joined them as a baby bunny and would not leave no matter how many times mama duck yelled and nipped at his sensitive ears. He kept right on following them, digging in the mud and soaking his head in the little pond in the center of the garden. The monk who tended the garden laughed every day at his fourth duck, and rewarded him with lettuce and tender radish sprouts when the furry one learned to swim. He sat on the monk’s lap and let the monk wrap him in a warm towel, and ate his sprouts one at a time, and fell asleep once he was dry again. And he went swimming with his duck brothers the next day and the day after that, and when he later married, his little bunny babies had webbed duck feet.
