uninvited

It's a long driveway, heavy with cottonwood, loud with the clatter of uninvited guests. Quail, pheasant, geese, guinea, peacock, roadrunner, hawk. The chickens feed the hawk and the coyotes, mostly in the spring when they are small and easy to catch. The roadrunners are full of outrage. Guinea sounds like a rusted hinge, peacock like a murdered lady. Can't get a moment alone around here.

Quail and roadrunners eat crunchy little bugs like grasshoppers and crickets. They like early spring foliage and hen scratch. Roadrunners also eat small rodents, when they can get them, but I don't think quail do. All of the wild birds who hang out in domesticate areas will eat chicken scratch or wild bird seed when it is available. They are not picky eaters, except that in general they will not eat oranges or lemons.
